In their own words:

My child Cece (nickname) is a teenager with Down syndrome, mental retardation and difficult to understand speech. Her challenges are that she “falls in love” too quickly with male staff members and will ignore peers a bit at times, focusing on the adults.

We have always wanted her to have some summer camp experiences similar to her younger brother who spends many weeks each summer at camps.  The ratio of campers to staff at those camps is too high to support Cece’s needs for more supervision.

Initially I heard about Xcite Steps  thru  an e-mail describing the program that I responded to. Then I met Matt at an information fair where the organization had a booth.

I knew the program was right for my child when I heard the philosophy of paying staff a living wage, plus the low ratio of staff to participant which better meet’s my child’s needs. We have been involved in camps and social groups.

Xcite Steps is unique because of its leader/founder with lifetime background in helping people with special needs.  Also by staff being very available by both cell phone and e-mail.

Yes, I would recommend Xcite Steps to others. I tell other families about the great staff, fun activities and low staff to participant ratios. She always has fun (She is not a person who provides a lot of details.) I can tell that she is enjoying the program by the cryptic comments she does make, plus she seems to be having fun when I come to pick her up from activities. She is tired after camp, which is usually a good sign that she was kept very active. She is more willing to try new things, like water sports due to camp participation. She is becoming better at distinguishing staff from peers (treating staff as staff and not a buddy or a boyfriend). She likes the supervised independence at adult activities.

Cece really likes Pam, and felt comfortable enough to call her cell phone yesterday to ask about an event planned for the evening.

Xcite Steps are not super well known, but those who are aware of the organization have both positive and negative views, mostly overwhelmingly positive!
