In their own words:

Tyler has Autism and has difficulty in the social aspect of his life.  There are not too many (or any at all) programs that would be appropriate for him.  They are always a little too high functioning or not enough for him. I heard about your program from Dawn Hummel.  She had met you and had Johnnie in some of your programs.

Initially, Tyler started to attend occasional weekend outings.  That increased to summer camps that lasted a few days.  He has joined your bowling leagues in the evenings.

Tyler writes on his calendar and journal about his outings – what he sees, who he sees, what he eats, what he does…He will write that he is going to go days in advance and wakes up in the morning ready to go.  That will be the first thing he says to me in the morning – that he is going to camp…..

Xcite steps is unique in that it is geared toward each individual.  They get one on one attention.  They work towards the desired goals set.

I would (and have) recommend this program to others.   It fills a void that is out there for children/adults like ours.

Tyler is thrilled to go to camp/outings.  Like I said before, he wakes up saying that he is going.  He is happy and smiling when he gets ready, and is so happy when I pick him up.

Tyler has always been very friendly and social, but he makes a point to say hello to everyone he meets.  He will point and ask for their name if he doesn’t know it.  He will always acknowledge people.  He is very organized, but makes a point to get ready and make sure he has everything in his pockets before he goes out.

I have not met a mentor I didn’t like, or Tyler didn’t like.  Pam has been an absolute dream.  She is very organized – always makes a point to tell me what happened that day and what Tyler did.  I know she is not a mentor but a director, I just wanted to say how much we love her.  Myles has been excellent.  He is very good with Tyler, always trying to get him to engage in conversation.  Always asking him questions and being truly interested in the answers!

When I first got involved with Xcite Steps, I would mention it to friends and would have to explain what the program was all about – now everyone has heard of you.  You have really good articles in the local paper and on many of my “Autism” websites.

I hope this helps and I covered what you needed!  Tyler loves the program!  I am so happy that we have been involved in your program.  It is very nice that he can still go to the “teen” outings even though he is really considered an “adult”.
